Report - Big development in Leeds chase for 24y/o talent, rival eight-figure offer in works
Leeds United could face significant competition in their bid to sign River Plate defender Lucas Martinez Quarta, according to El Intransigente.
The Argentinian outlet reported very recently that the Whites were the only team interested in landing the 24-year-old, who they see as a potential replacement for Brighton loanee Ben White.
Phil Hay has claimed that a deal to retain the Englishman this summer is looking increasingly difficult.
But their hopes of landing his South American alternative may have taken big blow too with news that La Liga outfit Real Betis are also keen on making a move.
The report states that it seemed as if Quarta’s future was set to be “in England with Leeds United’s shirt”, but that this new development complicates matters.
It is understood that Betis are willing to match Leeds’ proposed £11 million valuation of the player, but have been more open and communicative with River Plate over how they would structure their offer.
This could be a real blow for the Whites.
Losing out on White has felt like an increasing inevitability for a little while now, but missing out on a player who has seemingly emerged as one Bielsa’s top targets in recent weeks would be a real sucker punch.
Quarta’s agent, Gustavo Goni, recently stated that he expects some kind of movement in any potential transfer in the coming days.
Initially, it was easy to assume that he was referring to a move to Elland Road.
Now, however, that looks a lot less concrete, and unless they want to get beaten to the punch, Leeds will need to pull their finger out sharpish.
In other Leeds United news, Bielsa has one big demand for signing new Leeds deal and it involves Ben White – report.
