Rene van de Kerkhof lifts the lid on Leeds United-Cody Gakpo transfer link
Former Dutch player Rene van de Kerkhof has suggested that only Leeds United and Southampton were interested in signing Cody Gakpo during the summer.
Gakpo has been one of the top players for PSV Eindhoven and the Dutch national team, and he was heavily linked with a move to Elland Road this summer.
Kehkhof suggests that the 23-year-old forward is most likely to join clubs in Spain and Italy, rather than move to England.
“This summer there weren’t really any clubs that suit him. Leeds United, Southampton… I don’t disdain those clubs, but Gakpo can do more. I don’t think England really suits him anyway, Spain or Italy are more obvious,” said van de Kerkhof to Voetbal International (as relayed by VoetbalPrimeur).
Gakpo has been impressive this season for Eindhoven as well, and Leeds probably will make another effort to land him in the future transfer windows.
Victor Orta did make a strong attempt to sign Gakpo. He jetted out to the Netherlands ahead of transfer deadline day in an attempt to lure him to the Premier League, but the deal didn’t materialise.
In the end, the Whites made a panic buy and signed FC Zurich youngster Wilfried Gnonto instead. The club also allowed Dan James to go out on loan to Fulham as well.
Signing Gakpo would have represented a superb summer window for the club, although it can be said the Whites did extremely well in securing their targets.
This was a massive window for them where they lost two key players in the form of Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha. Jesse Marsch added significant depth to the side, but Gakpo would have been a stellar addition.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites tried a late summer deal to sign this Leicester player.
