Reliable journalist: ‘Ordinary’ player set to join Leeds in summer is ‘on a downward spiral’
Leeds United winger Helder Costa is on a “downward spiral”, according to Birmingham Mail journalist Alex Dicken, who covers Wolves for the Midlands newspaper.
Costa, 26, joined Leeds on a season-long loan from Wolves in the summer but the Whites are already set to sign the Portuguese attacker on a permanent deal worth £15million once that loan is over.
However Costa has failed to impress the bulk of Leeds United supporters with him scoring just three goals and supplying three assists in 37 Championship appearances this season.
Costa was one of the best players Wolves had in their last couple of seasons in the second-tier but he failed to take the step up to the Premier League in his stride and, understandably, Wolves took the decision to offload him.
And now, with that £15million move set to go through once his loan deal expires, it seems that Leeds are going to buy themselves a dud, based on what Dicken has said.
“I can’t claim to have seen an awful lot of Costa, but when I have watched Leeds I’ve been disappointed by him,” he told LeedsLive.
“The performances for Leeds I’ve seen fit in with what we saw from Costa during his final two seasons at Wolves. He’s very much a player on a downward spiral.
“The Costa who ripped the Championship to shreds in 2016/17 hasn’t been seen in a good while now and a return of three goals and two assists in the Championship is very ordinary for such a talented player.”
Costa’s form had shown a bit of an improvement before the coronavirus pandemic brought football to a halt but he was still nowhere near the best players in Leeds’ squad.
Still, Costa has played a lot of matches for Bielsa this season and we have all seen how much Jack Harrison improved in his second season at Elland Road.
Let’s hope the same happens for the currently underperforming winger.
