Iliman Meslier told Regis Le Bris the ball changed direction leading to the Sunderland equaliser in the 2-2 draw with Leeds United.
The Frenchman produced an all-time howler at the Stadium of Light on Friday [4 October] as he misjudged a deflected ball off Junior Firpo as the hosts rescued a point seven minutes into stoppage time.
BBC reporter Adam Pope reported on his X account [4 October] what Meslier said to the Sunderland boss in the aftermath of his costly mistake.
He wrote: “Le Bris says Meslier told him ‘ball changed direction when it hit the ground’.”
Illan Meslier produces costly error for Leeds United
Meslier will be one of the most disliked men in West Yorkshire as his error has cost Daniel Farke a vital three points in the Championship.
The 24-year-old managed to get into the heads of the Sunderland faithful as the goalkeeper whipped out the time-wasting tactics in the dying embers of the match, but unfortunately for Leeds, it was the home support that had the last laugh.
It was a mistake even Sunday league goalkeepers are not expected to make. All the hard work of his teammates to secure what was set to be a monumental result for the side was erased in one split-second lapse of judgement.
Joel Piroe and Firpo completed the turnaround with goals in each half after Chris Rigg opened the scoring for Sunderland on nine minutes The players made their feelings known towards the goalkeeper after the final whistle as the post-match scenes painted an ugly picture for Leeds.
Meslier will have to take it on the chin and move on quickly. The only way for the goalkeeper to atone for his error is to perform to the ability he is capable of in the coming weeks.
He will not want this mistake to be a talking point at the end of the season as a reason why Leeds failed to earn Premier League promotion.
