We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said the number of goals that Leeds United are conceding is “really worrying” amid the club losing two senior centre-backs to injury.
Robin Koch and Diego Llorente have both been ruled out with injury and Robinson thinks that Leeds are set for a “tough couple of weeks” with Ayling drafted into centre-back.
Leeds have conceded 22 goals in 12 games after coming into the Premier League with the best defence in the 19/20 Championship.
Robinson thinks that Marcelo Bielsa should stick with Luke Ayling at centre-back for the game against Newcastle tonight, despite Leeds conceding two from set-pieces against West Ham last Friday.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “Leeds have conceded the second-most goals in the Premier League, which is really worrying, and they look vulnerable every time the ball is put in the box.
“Bielsa has said he’s worried about the number of goals they’re conceding – going forward was never going to be a problem.
“Defending at set-pieces is something that needs to be addressed and it’s one of the easiest things to address on the football field. It’s about organisation, putting the hours in on the training field.
“You’re looking for leadership on the pitch to carry out what you’re doing on the training ground.
“Sometimes you go through a run of conceding from set-pieces but it’s becoming too regular to be a coincidence for Leeds.
“Bielsa obviously feels that Ayling is better at centre-back than his alternatives and I’d play him there above Struijk.
“But we’ve talked about Leeds not having a stable centre-back partnership this season. Koch’s out for a while now and Llorente’s out, so Ayling will have to play there at the weekend against Man United, too.
“It’s going to be a tough couple of weeks for Leeds.”
Bielsa didn’t announce his side to play Newcastle and said that he would refrain from doing that in the future after the coverage following his West Ham declaration.
Pablo Hernandez is fit to play after playing for the Under-23s on Sunday and could be a different option in attack.
