Raheem Sterling hails Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips

Raheem Sterling has lauded Leeds United ace Kalvin Phillips and West Ham midfielder Declan Rice’s performances.

The England midfield duo put in a majestic shift on Tuesday evening to nullify the German threat and helped Gareth Southgate’s side book a place in the Round of 16 of Euro 2020.

Phillips continued his feat of being the only England outfielder to play in every minute of the competition thus far.

After the game, the three-time Premier League winner with Manchester City singled out Phillips and Rice for special praise. He told the BBC, “We knew the intensity we can play at and not many teams can deal with it.

“The two boys in midfield, Declan [Rice] and [Kalvin] Phillips, they were class, they ate up ground and were animals in there.

“It was an all round great team performance.”

Kalvin Phillips’ stock has doubled since the EUROs began and we’re absolutely loving watching him in an England shirt this summer.

He’s looked unnerved by the occasion of it being his first international tournament and the pressure of ‘getting it home’ does not seem to bother him in the slightest.

Before the tournament began, very few were calling for his inclusion in England’s XI, but now only a handful would not want him in the team for the game against Ukraine.

He put in a more defensive display against Germany than the previous three games, but it was the need of the hour and he performed his duties to the T.

Having to deal with a world-class midfield of Leon Goretzka and Toni Kroos along with the movement of Robin Gosens and Thomas Muller, the Leeds ace had to be on his toes all game and he did just that.

It’s incredible to see the Yorkshire Pirlo shine on the biggest stage and we couldn’t be happier for him.
