Rafa Benitez reacts to Patrick Bamford penalty miss in Leeds United loss v Arsenal
Patrick Bamford missed a glorious opportunity to level the tie for Leeds United against Arsenal after he missed a penalty in the second half on Sunday (16 October) at Elland Road.
The Whites lost 1-0 against the Gunners in the Premier League, and Rafa Benitez has suggested that the penalty decision awarded was the right one, and the replays clearly showed that it struck the arm of Gabriel.
The former Everton boss, however, found the defender’s reaction “strange” and he wasn’t impressed with Bamford’s effort either.
“Yeah it was very clear. It was strange, no? His reaction but it was very clear,” said Benitez on Premier League Tv Productions (16 October).
“Normally you cannot explain that but also to miss the chance.. I don’t know how many goals he could have scored but it’s not good for him and for Leeds.”
This is a game Leeds should not have lost. Arsenal are the league leaders at the moment, but the Whites were brilliant, especially in the second half.
Jesse Marsch felt that his side could have scored four to five goals in the second half, but they failed to take their chances.
At least, the Whites have got a draw from this game, and it was really unfortunate a goal from Bamford was ruled out, and then he missed a chance to equalise from the spot.
It can happen. The Whites showed great intent and intensity in the second half and they will feel that they have squandered the opportunity yet again.
The Whites are winless in their last six games. They have lost games two in a row and find themselves 15th in the league table at the moment.
They need some points on the table. After a strong start to the season, it feels like it’s back to square one.
