Pundit claims Leeds can achieve ‘real success’ with cup run this season

Former footballer and Sky Sports pundit Sue Smith has suggested that Leeds United should target a successful FA Cup run this season.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side travel to Crawley Town on Sunday looking to make it past the third round of the FA Cup for the first time under the Argentine’s leadership.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday programme (Saturday, Jan 9), Smith said that Leeds could build on their Premier League success with a cup run.

She said, “Obviously, Leeds came up and the first thing they want to do is stay up, they want to stay in the Premier League. That’s the most important thing, and then it’s what else can they do?

“If they can have a really good cup run, if they can get as high as they possibly can in the Premier League, it would be a real success for them.

“But that’s why the FA Cup is so good, there is always that chance for an upset.”

Leeds will be the side looking to avoid an upset when they travel to face League Two outfit Crawley.

The Whites should be in the hat for the fourth round draw and with plenty of lower league sides knocked out, this is where the competition will get interesting.

We have shown this season that we are capable of taking on any team in the Premier League so a draw against a bigger club won’t be daunting.

On their day, Bielsa’s side can beat anyone and as Smith says, Leeds could target the FA Cup to add to this season’s success.

It would be an excellent achievement if the club can stay in the Premier League at the first attempt and go on a successful domestic cup run.

If we make it to the next round there will be plenty of clubs hoping that they aren’t drawn against Bielsa’s men.

Let’s not get carried away but there is no reason why we couldn’t put a trip to Wembley in the diary later this season.
