PSG used to drive up price tag for Azzedine Ounahi after Leeds United make major bid

Paris Saint-Germain are being used to drive up the price of Leeds United target Azzedine Ounahi, according to Express reporter Ryan Taylor.

L’Equipe reported on Monday (8 January) that despite the Whites putting a written offer of €25million [£22million] in for the Morocco international, who starred at the World Cup, the player wasn’t interested in the move.

Napoli have been credited with a much lower offer of €15million [£13.2million], while Almeria are apparently unwilling to go above €10million [£8.8million], and Taylor now reports both clubs, as well as French side Marseille, are all in talks as the fee gets inflated.

Writing on his Twitter account on Monday afternoon (9 January) Taylor said: “Reports in France suggest Leeds bid for Azzedine Ounahi worth closer to €25m (around £22m).

“Appears PSG’s name being used to drive up interest/price tag. Napoli, Marseille & Almeria among clubs in talks to sign player.”

Lost cause

Leeds United have been here before and if Charles De Ketelaere taught the board anything it is not to waste time offering over the odds for a player who doesn’t want to make the move.

There is enough competition that it would be a tricky race to win as it is, and if Angers are apparently trying to pump up the price with talk of PSG then it seems like a mess the club don’t have time to deal with this month.

The Whites are proving to be highly active in this window, in stark contrast to 12-months ago, with Max Wober already in and Georginio Rutter looking like he is set to join him any time.

Adding an international calibre central midfielder would be an unexpected bonus on top of defensive and attacking reinforcements.

If Ounahi, 22, is the only candidate for that role that United are looking at then they could remain in touch with negotiations, but if they have any alternatives then it would appear their time is going to be better spent pushing elsewhere.

And where all the money that is suddenly on offer at Elland Road is coming from will no doubt be a question that comes to the forefront as soon as the window closes with the 49ers waiting in the wings for a takeover.

In other Leeds United news, a club is set to make a “huge profit” out of the Whites who could follow suite in the near future.
