'Promotion is very important' - Championship midfielder claims Leeds 'deserve' to go up

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Joey Pelupessy has claimed that Leeds United “deserve” to be promoted this season.

The Whites are currently stuck in a state of limbo after the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic brought play to a halt across England.

In recent days the Telegraph have subsequently reported that a number of Premier League clubs are planning to try and block promotion to the top flight if the Championship season cannot be played to completion.

But Pelupessy has insisted that sides must still go up this term, and insists that Leeds are most deserving of a spot in the top division.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, he said: “It’s hard to say what should happen but Leeds and West Brom deserve it because they’ve spent almost the whole season in those [automatic promotion] places.

“Promotion is very important and maybe having 22 [Premier League] teams is more fair but if you have promotion normally you have to have relegation.

“I don’t know if Norwich staying in the Premier League is really fair, but they would be really lucky [to escape relegation] and I suppose it’s the same between the Championship and League One.

“It’s really hard to decide what’s fair but you have to make it clear and do everything or nothing. I’m just happy I don’t have to make that decision because not everyone is going to be happy.”

The Owls midfielder is spot on with his assessment here.
Over the past couple of days we’ve heard from the likes of Norwich City sporting director Stuart Webber and Brighton striker Glenn Murray telling us that it would be unfair to promote Leeds unless they are able to finish off all of their remaining matches.
But surely what would be more unfair is to discard 37 games of a league campaign for the sake of keeping up a team who have been struggling in the lower reaches of the Premier League all season because of their own shortcomings.
Voiding the Championship campaign would be a huge blow to the sporting integrity of English football, and if promotion is to be carried out – as it should be – then Leeds and West Brom are by far the two most deserving sides.
It really is that simple.
