Pontus Jansson update emerges from BBC journalist ahead of Leeds United clash v Brentford
Former Leeds United centre-back Pontus Jansson has been ruled out of this weekend’s clash between Brentford and the Whites at Elland Road as he still nurses an injury, according to BBC Radio Leeds journalist Adam Pope.
The 31-year-old made 120 appearances for the Whites during a three-year spell becoming a pivotal defensive figure under Bielsa, before leaving in controversial circumstances to join Brentford in 2019.
Jansson left Elland Road after he was deemed not part of Bielsa’s plans but has undergone some of a renaissance at the Gtech Community Stadium, figuring in their promotion to the Premier League and going on to make over 100 appearances for Thomas Frank’s men.
He’s only featured in seven Premier Leagues so far this season and is reportedly set to miss this weekend’s clash against his former club because of a hamstring injury.
Pope took to his personal Twitter account to report Brentford’s team news, tweeting [20 January]: “Brentford team news: Rico Henry is back. Pontus Jansson and Frank Onyeka too early to be ready. Shandon Baptiste getting closer but a week away – Aaron Hickey touch and go for Sunday”
Jansson will have been well up for this fixture had been fit, and the 32-year-old will surely be gutted that the game has come too soon for him to return.
The former Elland Road man will argue he has unfinished business at the Yorkshire ground, and it’s a shame he won’t be able to claim any of his own bragging rights on Sunday.
What’s certain is that this will be a tasty encounter, between two teams on opposite ends of the Premier League table.
Brentford’s last visit to Elland Road saw the Whites salvage a late draw courtesy of a Patrick Bamford leveller with the game ending 2-2.
Thomas Frank and the Leeds faithful have endured a tumultuous relationship, dating back to their time in the Championship, and we are certainly in for another enthralling showpiece once again.
