Poland manager Czesław Michniewicz aids Leeds United with Mateusz Klich decision

Poland boss Czesław Michniewicz and Mateusz Klich decided between them to leave the player at Leeds United says the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The 31-year-old is suspended for the World Cup play-off final but could have played in a friendly against Scotland, but consultation between coach and player resulted in him being omitted in order to spend more time working with Jesse Marsch at the Whites’ training ground.

Graham Smyth writes in the YEP report: “Michniewicz felt Klich’s international break would be better served at Thorp Arch, where he continues to learn the ropes of new head coach Jesse Marsch’s footballing philosophy.”

Polish FA media officer Jakub Kwiatkowski told the paper: “It was a common decision of player and coach not to call him up for the camp.”

Klich has played under United’s new American manager against Leicester and Norwich, but was left out for the poor loss to Aston Villa.

Anything that can give the club an edge in the fight against the drop is helpful right now.

The boost received from Joe Gelhardt’s dramatic late winner has changed the mood, but they are far from out of danger yet.

It is encouraging to see that the Whites’ midfield man is fully focused on the relegation battle, and pleasing that his national boss supports that here.

Had he been available for the Poles’ key play-off game it might have been a different issue but common sense has prevailed.

Too often there are squabbles between club and national coaches, where neither take into account each others’ interests, but there’s none of that this time.

Marsch will want as much time as possible with any available players, as coming in midseason is always a challenge.

Changing the tactical outlook from a system so famously drilled into the squad as Marcelo Bielsa’s will make the current work on the training ground even more crucial.

In other Leeds United news, another player is at the training ground for less positive reasons.
