‘Points deduction’, ‘Car crash’ – Many Leeds fans react to EFL Twitter statement
Leeds United fans are taking a lot of pleasure from the EFL tweet that Derby are under investigation for “excess losses”.
They’ve fallen foul of the Profit & Sustainability rules and Derby could now potentially face a points deduction.
The bombshell news dropped on Thursday evening.
Derby and Leeds have history. It was Derby who initiated the SpyGate scandal last season that led to a lot of figures within the game accusing Leeds and Marcelo Bielsa of cheating.
By way of riposte, Bielsa conducted a special press conference where he tried to explain that watching opponents train was just one part of a very detailed analysis he did for every game.
Ironically, that was a year ago to the day that the EFL announcement was made – something that didn’t escape the notice of many Leeds’ fans.
In May last year, Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani accused Derby of “more cheating” than Leeds because of a scheme that saw them sell their own stadium to a sister company.
The ‘feud’ with Derby carried through to the play-offs, when Derby put Leeds out in the semi-finals, with various players and manager Frank Lampard lampooning SpyGate in their celebrations.
In his press conference (live in the LUFC app, 12.30pm) yesterday, Bielsa talked again of the fact that other clubs were playing fast and loose with financial fair play.
“Other clubs don’t like this economic rule,” Bielsa said. “They bring in players, do different things to avoid punishments. I’m not demanding punishment for clubs that don’t accept the rules.”
Ironically, just a few hours later, the EFL verdict dropped and Leeds fans, understandably, are loving it.
