Leeds United have had to install AstroTurf to steps in the Norman Hunter stand amid fears over player safety, according to the Daily Mail.
The newspaper claims the Premier League ordered the Whites to add the AstroTurf due to the concrete steps being hazardous for away teams who are walking in their studded boots to and from the pitch.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, away teams at Elland Road are using a temporary dressing room away from where Marcelo Bielsa and his mean prepare for a match.
As quoted by the Mail, a Leeds spokesman has confirmed the issue has been resolved. He said: “The only concerns raised by the compliance team from the Premier League have been regarding the referee bell and a need for some AstroTurf on the steps leading to the pitch — both of which have been resolved.”
Not the only change needed at ER
Let’s face it, it’s a good job the Premier League told Leeds to do this because walking on studs, especially on concrete steps on a cold and wet night, could be very dangerous. We don’t want to see anyone hurt themselves walking to and from the dressing rooms so we’re glad the club has resolved this issue quickly.
However, one issue that won’t be sorted out straight away at Elland Road is the state of the pitch, which resembles that of a non-league team’s at the moment.
Leeds’ chief executive Angus Kinnear has recently been quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post as saying that the pitch will be re-laid at the end of the season.
It’s more than just replacing the grass with the entire draining system also needing a revamp.
Leeds spent a long time outside of the Premier League before their return to the top-flight this year so it’s perhaps something that is long overdue.
It would have probably been done in the summer just gone too if it wasn’t for the short break between seasons.
It’s a shame it won’t be done until the summer because it does seem to be affecting the way Bielsa’s team operates.
However, it’s the same for the opposition too so we don’t want to use that as an excuse for some poor home performances this season.
In other Leeds United news, fans have urged the Whites to sign this Netherlands international.
