Phil Thompson shares Leeds United and Patrick Bamford fears

Phil Thompson suggests Leeds United may be suffering from second season syndrome as they remain winless in the Premier League after five games.

The ex-Liverpool defender, speaking on the ‘Where’s Jeff?’ podcast [23/09/21], is also worried about England international Patrick Bamford.

Thompson said: “There’s something about this Leeds team, has everyone maybe sussed them out now?

“It’s getting to one of those points, Bamford, where you’re going ‘is he going through one of those spells where he is lacking confidence again?'”

Early days…

There comes a time where proper attention will have to be paid to results and performances, but it still seems too early to suggest Leeds have been found out at this level.

They’ve still only lost two games this season – both against Champions League sides in Manchester United and Liverpool – and thus they remain unbeaten against all other sides around them.

That’s despite an absence list that seems to be growing by the day, with the likes of Raphinha, Bamford and Luke Ayling joining Diego Llorente and Robin Koch in the treatment room recently.

Leeds will hope the former trio will return against West Ham on Saturday, and that’s when the true test will be, and Marcelo Bielsa’s credentials will be firmly in focus.

A competitive showing at Elland Road will lead to renewed optimism, and if that is followed by a win at Watford before the next international break, the mood will be very different.

In other Leeds United news, our predicted XI against West Ham includes a start for this Under-23s ace, while a big-money man has been dropped.
