Phil Jones reveals ‘clever’ Daniel Farke move which changed Leeds vs Derby

Leeds United progressed through to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 3-1 win over Derby County at Pride Park.

Daniel Farke’s side were behind at half-time on Sunday, with Joel Piroe seeing his penalty saved before Ben Brereton Diaz put the Championship outfit ahead.

However, the Whites were much improved in the second period, equalising through Willy Gnonto and going ahead moments later when Ao Tanaka tapped in from close range.

James Justin added a third in stoppage time to secure the win for Leeds, and his introduction at half-time had a big impact on the outcome of the tie.

James Justin substitution changed the game

Sebastiaan Bornauw was replaced by Justin at half-time after the centre-back limped off the pitch at the end of the first period.

Bornauw had struggled against Corey Blackett-Taylor, in what was just his fourth start across all competitions since signing from Wolfsburg over the summer.

Farke decided to put Justin on the right of a back three, and the change worked to perfection, providing Leeds with more threat going forward.

The former Leicester City defender even grabbed his first goal for the club, bursting into the box in the 93rd minute and finishing Lukas Nmecha’s cross.

Speaking on the BBC’s FA Cup highlights show, former Manchester United defender Phil Jones praised Farke for the switch.

Jones said: “I thought it was a clever substitution from Daniel Farke. Bornauw had a really tough start to the game, a really tough half; he struggled.

“James Justin went into the right of the back three, and what it allowed them to do was in possession, he could play in more advanced positions and be more of an influence further up the pitch.”

Who will Leeds play next in FA Cup?

After beating Derby in the third round, Leeds will be in the FA Cup Fourth Round draw, which takes place on Monday evening at around 6.35 pm.

The draw is available to watch on TNT Sports 1 and Discovery+, but supporters can also tune in for free on the TNT Sports YouTube channel.

Leeds are ball number 18, and will be hoping for another relatively easy tie as they look to progress further in the competition.

Fourth round ties will take place on the weekend of 14 and 15 February.
