Phil Hay shares what people close to Bielsa have told him about new Leeds contract
Marcelo Bielsa wants to sign a new contract and extend his stay at Leeds United after winning promotion to the Premier League, according to Phil Hay.
However, The Athletic journalist adds that Bielsa will want certain things done in order for him to agree a contract extension with his existing deal due to expire at the end of the season.
Writing in a Q&A session on The Athletic website, Hay said: “I’ve no doubt that Leeds will want to keep him and I’m sure they’ll all find common ground. From speaking to people close to Bielsa, he wants to stay – but he will expect certain expectations to be met, as usual.”
It would be one of the biggest shocks in Leeds United history if Bielsa did not extend his deal at Elland Road.
Although we’re sure he’s a massive fan of the Championship, we doubt that he would want to be anywhere other than in the Premier League with Leeds right now.
Bielsa has done a ridiculously good job in the last two years.
Although his critics will say that he should have guided Leeds to promotion last season, it is perhaps in the best interests of everyone that he spent an extra year in the Championship.
Bielsa’s second season in the second-tier has helped him understand English football even more and more importantly, it has offered his players a chance to evolve even more under him.
It would’ve been a baptism of fire if Leeds won promotion last year with Bielsa not 100 per cent happy with the squad.
But now he has had the time to sit back and really tinker with things to get them just how he wants them and we cannot wait to see the club go at it in the top-flight once more next season.
