Phil Hay shares what Liam Cooper did to Leeds United fans at Elland Road in clash v Norwich City

Leeds United club captain Liam Cooper blew a kiss to the Elland Road crowd as he warmed up during the Whites’ win over Norwich City, according to Phil Hay.

Daniel Farke’s side booked their place in the Championship playoff final with an incredible 4-0 win over the Canaries on Thursday (16 May) thanks to goals from Ilia Gruev, Joel Piroe, Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville.

While the atmosphere inside Elland Road began as one of nerves, Gruev’s early goal quickly relaxed the home crowd and according to Athletic journalist Hay, the supporters were quick to serenade Cooper in his final home match.

Writing on X on Thursday (16 May) he said: “Big chants for Liam Cooper as he warms up on the sidelines.

“Blows a kiss to the crowd. Almost certainly his last night at Elland Road as a Leeds player.”

Will Liam Cooper leave Leeds United and Elland Road in the summer transfer window?

While he may not have played much for Leeds United this season, Cooper is a modern-day great at Elland Road and it is great to see that he got an excellent reception by all of those inside the ground on Thursday.

He could have left the Whites following their relegation from the Premier League last season but he decided to stay and try to help Farke’s side make an immediate return. Now he has the chance to do that at Wembley.

Despite the Scotsman’s desire to sign a new contract and extend his stay, it doesn’t seem like a new deal will be on the horizon any time soon. Whether or not Leeds win promotion, it feels like Cooper will be finished with the Whites.

Hopefully, his career in a Leeds shirt can end with him lifting that trophy at Wembley. He may not have played a regular role this season, but his experience and leadership off of the pitch cannot be underestimated.
