Phil Hay shares what Leeds United fans did to Leif Davis after 4-0 win v Ipswich

Ipswich defender Leif Davis was given a massive round of applause after being subbed off against Leeds United on Saturday 23 December, according to Phil Hay.

The former Whites left-back gave away a penalty and scored an own-goal as he endured a nightmare on his return to West Yorkshire since leaving for East Anglia.

Hay did admit that Davis didn’t seem to want the standing ovation from the home crowd, as he trudged around on a rare poor afternoon for himself.

Hay wrote on X: “Massive cheer and round of applause for poor old Leif Davis as he leaves the field. Bless him.

“Getting a standing ovation from the West Stand as he walks past. Which doesn’t seem to be what he wants, but them’s the breaks.”

Nightmare.

If we are all being honest, Davis has been one of the best left-backs in the Championship this season and at a moment where Leeds have not had one single option there for years.

Having said that, he looked like the moment got the best of him this afternoon as he returned to Elland Road looking to make a real statement.

He did just that, but it was in all the wrong ways as he put the ball in his own net and gave away a penalty in what became quite an embarrassing afternoon.

Leeds were sensational though and made Ipswich look as though they were fighting relegation, not serve points ahead of them and pushing for promotion.

This will give the Whites immense confidence moving through the Christmas period, and could have the opposite effect on Ipswich – fingers crossed that the gap could be closed to four after Boxing Day.
