Phil Hay claimed that Illan Meslier received applause from the away end after Leeds United beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield on Saturday.

The Frenchman made a season-high nine saves in the game to restrict the Reds to just one goal in front of their own fans.

The Whites kept pushing and found a lucky break on the transition with Crysencio Summerville scoring an important winner late on to secure the three points.

Via Twitter, the Athletic’s Hay wrote, “Meslier getting huge applause from the away end. Looks a bit shellshocked and blown away. Brilliant performance from him.”

Performance of the season?

Meslier was understandably criticised for his performance in the first half as there were a few nervy moments that could have led to Leeds conceding.

However, in the second half, the Frenchman was a different animal as he made save after save to keep out the Liverpool side.

He did let one in when Mo Salah scored but that was just bad defending more than anything else.

He also bailed Liam Cooper out on a couple of occasions as the Whites captain clearly did not have a good game.

It’s moments like these when Leeds realise what an asset they’ve got on their hands and they will be hoping that he stays at the club for a few more years.

Meslier knows that playing like this will get him in contention to make his France debut and if he’s getting everything he wants at Elland Road, he may not want to leave just as yet.
