Phil Hay shares what he's been told about Leeds United signing Azzedine Ounahi as £20m update shared
The Athletic’s Phil Hay has revealed Leeds United do like Angers midfielder Azzedine Ounahi as Jesse Marsch looks to add a more forward-thinking midfielder to his squad.
Ounahi, 22, enjoyed an exceptional World Cup with Morocco which has seen a number of clubs show interest in the lead-up to January.
Leeds are on the verge of signing Georginio Rutter for £30million and have already completed the signing of Max Wober for £10.6million.
Hay has since revealed there’s a “temptation” for Leeds to make a move for Ounahi, with the 22-year-old likely to cost in the region of £20million.
“There have been a few reports about Ounahi and from speaking to people and people talking to us at The Athletic that’s definitely one to keep an eye on,” said Hay (Phil Hay Show, 26m 41s, 13 January).
“It doesn’t seem to be in dispute at all that Leeds do like him and there does seem to be a temptation there for Leeds to get involved in this one.
“I got the sense that part of the rationale for making sure the price for Rutter was right was they didn’t want to spend too much up front which allowed them no wriggle room to do anything else.
“Ounahi is definitely worth more now than he was before the World Cup. He probably would’ve cost £15million before the World Cup whereas now he would be around £20million.”
Get it done
After Mateusz Klich’s departure, a move for the Moroccan international makes a lot of sense for Leeds. The 22-year-old is a forward-thinking midfielder who comes in a similar mould to Klich. Leeds’ central midfield options are naturally very high-energy and defensive-minded therefore a more offensive option is something for Marsch to consider.
It appears there is certainly traction in this deal after Hay’s comments and it would be an impressive piece of business should the board be able to pull it off. Ounahi has shown he can perform against the World’s best and could be well-suited to the Premier League.
He’s also still relatively young which could mean he could go on to be an asset for Leeds in the coming years should he make the move to Elland Road.
After the money which has already been spent by Leeds in the January window, it will be intriguing to see if they yet again commit to another large transfer fee.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are keen on signing this Wolves player in January.
