Phil Hay shares what he was told about COVID-19 tests at Leeds with ‘More than one’ positive

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has claimed that there’s been more than one positive coronavirus test at Leeds United since testing began.

It was reported last week that at least one individual had a positive result at Leeds but now it seems that it was multiple people who were confirmed to have caught COVID-19.

Some clubs have released statements when they have picked up a positive test but Leeds have remained quiet on the matter – at least publically, anyway.

Former Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Hay has revealed that Leeds did have multiple positive tests but added that the latest round of testing was all clear.

“There was at least one [positive test] last week. I was told there was more than one but the club haven’t made any comment on that,” said Hay on the Phil Hay Show podcast.

“I don’t think they had any more positive test over the weekend.

“These are coming thick and fast so we should be due another shortly because the protocol is to test twice a week but I get the sense it wasn’t causing any panic.

“I think they’d been very pleased that up until that point, they’d been clear and hadn’t had any positive results.”

With the way coronavirus is, it was more or less inevitable that someone at Leeds would test positive for it.

Around half of the clubs in the Championship have been affected but thankfully, no one who has tested positive has been seriously ill since training resumed.

The big story this week was that Stoke manager Michael O’Neill had tested positive but so far, the 50-year-old has not had any symptoms and is doing well as far as we know.

Even though some people are testing positive, it is still a very minute number and one that should not disrupt the plan to restart the season next week.

Leeds face Cardiff next Sunday so let’s hope everyone is fit and ready to play once that comes around.
