Phil Hay shares what he noticed v Preston that suggests Leeds key player 'might have a problem'
Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich could have been suffering from a “problem” in the 1-1 draw against Preston on Thursday, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.
Klich, 29, was nowhere near his best for the Whites in their Boxing Day showdown at Elland Road and fans were not afraid to air their concerns about the midfielder on Twitter after the game.
Preston went ahead in the first half after Klich was dispossessed and the Poland international struggled to show any kind of creativity or steel in the middle of the park.
Former Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Hay has suggested that there could have been an issue with Klich during the match as substitute Robbie Gotts went through a far more serious warm-up than he normally would.
“The way they were putting Gotts through a warm-up pre-match suggested Klich might have a problem. He found it hard to dictate today’s game,” said Hay via a Q&A session on The Athletic’s website on Boxing Day.
Klich definitely struggled against Preston but it was by no means a classic display by any of Leeds’ players.
The midfield always struggled without Pablo Hernandez, who suffered an injury in the last game and is now likely to spend a month on the sidelines.
Hernandez’s influence is already being missed and players like Klich need to step up while the Spanish veteran recovers.
However if there is an issue with Klich – and Hay definitely noticed a sign that there is – Leeds have a problem.
Luckily, Tyler Roberts and Jamie Shackleton should be back soon while there has also been some good news about Adam Forshaw lately.
Klich has started every Championship game for Leeds this season and may need a rest.
