Phil Hay shares what happened in Leeds United meeting between Orta and Deco
Leeds United ace Raphinha’s agent Deco met with Victor Orta during Christmas, claims Phil Hay.
At that point, it seemed set that the Brazilian was to sign a new deal at Elland Road.
However, due to Marcelo Bielsa’s exit and the club’s battle against relegation, things have slowed down.
Hay wrote in his Athletic Q&A, “Around Christmas, Victor Orta and Deco met at least twice and there was plenty of optimism about Raphinha agreeing new terms.
“Very little has been said since then and common sense tells you that both Leeds’ brush with relegation and the change of head coach at Elland Road will have dissuaded the player from rushing into signing a longer deal.
“He knows he is sought-after.”
This could be Orta losing his convincing powers at Leeds.
There certainly is some way that he can get Raphinha to sign a new deal at Leeds.
Sooner or rather, the Brazilian will be off to achieve greater things away from Elland Road but that does not mean he’s not open to an immediate pay hike and s lightly low release clause.
Last season may have been a challenge worth being part of, but this season, the true reality of Leeds has been exposed.
They are a bottom half side trying to establish themselves as regulars in the Premier League.
This certainly is not what Raphinha wants to waste his best years doing and would fancy playing for top clubs and challenging for major honours.
He certainly will thrive in the Champions League and would shine on a continental platform.
A club like Barcelona may be well suited to his strengths and he could go on to become one of the most potent attacking players in Spain.
