Phil Hay shares what Daniel Farke indicated about new Leeds United transfers ahead of deadline day
Phil Hay has shared that Daniel Farke indicated signing defensive players ahead of the transfer deadline is the priority for Leeds United.
The Athletic journalist attended the German’s press conference ahead of the Whites’ game against Bristol City on Friday, 2 January.
Djed Spence, Leo Hjelde and Luke Ayling have all departed this month and no new defenders have arrived in their place.
Hay wrote on Twitter: “Farke on transfers in the last 24 hours of the window: ‘If there is a perfect fit then we do it. If there isn’t then we won’t.’ Indicating again that defensive additions are the priority.”
Get it done
Leaving it so late in the day to secure new signings is not a healthy thing the club hierarchy have done and they should not live to regret it.
It remains to be seen if work is ongoing behind the scenes because by now they’ve got to at least reach advanced talks with players and clubs.
The time for negotiations are done and if there were three defensive exits this month, surely there would have been a plan in place for replacements.
Farke undoubtedly will be fuming if he’s lost two first-team full-backs and a young defender capable of playing all across the backline, without signing anyone new.
Leeds are currently worse off in comparison to the start of January and it should have been the other way around and fans have every reason to be annoyed.
It’s imperative that the 49ers do not continue making the same mistakes like the past regime did as that will benefit nobody.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites could now move fast to sign a West Ham defender with just a few negotiation points left to iron out.
