Phil Hay shares update on Will Ferrell attendance at Elland Road after Leeds United investment
The Athletic’s Phil Hay has delivered an update on the attendance of various Leeds United stakeholders at last weekend’s defeat to Southampton, including Will Ferrell.
It has been reported that while many of 49ers Enterprises’ investment group turned out at Elland Road for the regular season finale, Ferrell was not in attendance on this occasion – but “that day will come”.
The 49ers are said to be calm in the chaotic nature of the end of this campaign, in which Leeds United must do it the hard way if they are to earn immediate promotion back to the Premier League. They take on Daniel Farke’s former side Norwich City over two legs.
Leeds have long been an English football giant, but across the pond, streaming companies may bid to launch a lucrative series at Elland Road now Ferrell is on board as a minority investor.
“Much to discuss at Leeds United, but nothing to talk about”
These were the words written by Hay which eloquently illustrate the limbo Leeds United’s hierarchy find themselves in.
With travel plans arranged for the Southampton defeat whilst automatic promotion was still firmly within reach, the matchday and preceding dinner meeting the previous night were undoubtedly occasions where those at Leeds know they have a lot on the agenda, but are unable to begin without knowing where their fate lies.

Confidence is claimed to be high in the play-offs – at least if you’re to believe Farke or at least see past the bluff – but the reality is this is not where Leeds aimed to be come this month when the objectives were laid bare last summer.
Once those upstairs at Elland Road know which division they’ll compete in during 2024-25, the assignment can be rewritten, and Ferrell may just be there on the opening day – be it against Manchester United or Oxford United.
