Phil Hay shares update on whether Leeds United have opened Elland Road after security threat

Leeds United have been forced to keep their Elland Road Stadium closed today (Saturday, 25 March) after being told of a security threat by the police on Friday, according to Phil Hay.

The club’s ticket office, foundation offices and the club shop were all forced to close to the public on Friday (25 March) through the police’s advice that there was a security risk on the stadium.

Pictures across social media, press and TV from Friday showed a significant police presence at the club’s home stadium, with the entire ground cordoned off by fencing.

The Athletic’s journalist Hay took to Twitter (Saturday, 25 March) to provide an update on the West Yorkshire club’s stadium and more detail on whether anybody had been arrested in relation to the security threat.

He wrote: “Elland Road remaining closed today as police continue investigation into security threat against Leeds United’s stadium.

“A 20-year-old man was arrested yesterday.”

Strange

This is a truly strange occurrence for Leeds to be in the middle of, and the reasoning for why the stadium was targeted is still unclear.

Luckily the police have managed to make an arrest in relation to the threat, however, the fact that the ground is still closed today suggests that police aren’t entirely sure it is fully safe yet.

Thankfully nobody has come to harm and with the first team out on international duty, there was far less action going on at Elland Road than usual.

Now that an arrest has been made the imminent threat looks to have reduced a little and everybody associated with the club can look to get back to their usual lives in the coming days.

Hopefully, Elland Road can return to its usual status ahead of the club’s next Premier League home game against Crystal Palace on Saturday, 9 April, before hosting Liverpool and Leicester City before the end of April.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites may have yet another injury concern going into the international break as player has trouble with his left ankle after the Wolves win.
