Phil Hay shares unexpected update on Leeds 28-year-old, makes claim about JKA return

Adam Forshaw’s season looked to be over when the Leeds United midfielder underwent surgery on a hip injury in February.

The 28-year-old, who hasn’t played since September, was ruled out until August with the view to him returning to action for Leeds in time for the start of the 2020/21 campaign.

However with the coronavirus pandemic bringing this season to a halt and there still being nine matches to play, it has handed Forshaw a glimmer of hope about playing a role in the Whites’ promotion bid.

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay says that Forshaw still has a lot of work to do before being able to play in a competitive fixture again but his rate of recovery has exceeded expectations and there’s a chance he might be able to play this season.

Hay also added that Jean-Kevin Augustin has made good progress in his recovery from a hamstring injury and is expected to be part of Marcelo Bielsa’s matchday squad once football returns.

Speaking on the Phil Hay podcast, the journalist said: “Without going through all the murderball sessions and all that Bielsa asks for, [Augustin] sounds like he is very, very close and, certainly, if Leeds have three or four weeks to warm up again he could be part of the 18.

“And likewise, someone like Adam Forshaw. I think with his recovery and a need for a proper, full pre-season, that would rule him out of any games in June and July. But actually, he’s suddenly not a million miles away.

“I don’t think there’s any expectation at all that he’d be involved in what’s left of the season but, across the country, there are players who will benefit from this because it will give them a chance to get fit.”

This is great news about both players.

Before Forshaw suffered his hip injury he was in great form and although it might take him some time to rediscover those performances from August, just having him around is a massive boost.

As for Augustin, we are still yet to see what he can do for Leeds and it is expected that he could have some role to play in the run-in – once the Championship is back.
