Phil Hay shares ‘surprised’ verdict on Joe Rodon starting for Leeds United v Southampton
Phil Hay would be “surprised” if Joe Rodon doesn’t return to the starting lineup for Leeds United against Southampton on Saturday (30 September).
Speaking on The Square Ball podcast on Thursday (28 September), the Athletic journalist said the Welsh international “will come back in” after his one-game ban following his red card against Hull City.
He added that the 25-year-old defender has been “terrific” since joining on loan from Tottenham and that the Whites can’t leave him out based on his recent form.

“He will come back in won’t he because it’s a one-game ban,” said Hay. “I’d be really surprised if he doesn’t, he’s been terrific. I don’t think in this form you can leave Rodon out.”
Solid
There is no doubt that Rodon has been excellent since he joined Leeds on loan over the summer, so it seems logical that he would return to the starting lineup.
It may seem a little harsh on Liam Cooper, who is the likely man to miss out, but the Whites performed very well defensively without him while he was out injured.
The captain played reasonably well alongside Pascal Struijk in the 3-0 victory over Watford, but the pair did look a little awkward at times due to them both being left-footed.

That means there is a bit more balance with Rodon in there and Daniel Farke will be keen to get him back involved after he impressed before his sending-off against Hull.
There have been a lot of goals in Southampton’s games so far this season, so ensuring his side are strong at the back will be one of the Whites manager’s main focuses.
In other Leeds United news, the club could be set to receive a cash windfall after an £88million development has emerged.
