Phil Hay shares if Leeds United will reignite Conor Gallagher pursuit

Phil Hay suggests that Leeds United could have an eye on Conor Gallagher as Marcelo Bielsa tends to retain an interest in players.

The Leeds boss signed Dan James two and a half years after he initially wanted to, and he could be keen on signing Gallagher should he be available.

The Whites wanted to sign the Chelsea midfielder on loan in the summer [Football.London], but he ended up moving to Crystal Palace, with playing time being one of the deciding factors.

When asked whether Leeds could pursue Gallagher next summer, the Athletic’s Leeds correspondent Hay responded on his Q&A, “The midfield is, and has been since August, the glaring gap in the squad. I think the reality was this: Bielsa has a specific remit for a midfielder.

“About Gallagher, he’s having a fine season for Palace so far. It’s very easy to see how he would have fitted in at Leeds but ultimately, he expected to play more games at Palace and he was probably right in that respect.

“His value will be going up and up but as you saw with James, Bielsa does tend to retain an interest in specific players he rates. Gallagher is probably hoping for a chance at Chelsea though.”

Quality player

Gallagher would’ve been a fantastic acquisition for Leeds and it’s one that they may live to regret.

Regarding playing time, he would arguably be an upgrade on Mateusz Klich and possibly be a regular in this side.

While he may not have been thrown right into the eleven, as Patrick Vieira did at Crystal Palace, we’re sure that he would eventually have become a regularly by October or November.

He may want a chance at Chelsea, but if the Blues are already stacked with so many midfielders, they could look to loan him out again or cash in on his services.

At 21, he’s already played for two Premier League sides on loan and has thrived at West Brom as well as Palace.

Even if his price goes up, he is a player who’ll improve this Leeds eleven and is only going to get better.

He would come to Elland Road with a high resale value and if he’s available next summer, Victor Orta must move heaven and earth to sign him.
