Phil Hay shares if Leeds United likely to activate Adam Forshaw extension clause

Phil Hay believes that Leeds United are unlikely to activate the one-year extension clause option in Adam Forshaw’s contract.

The 31-year-old’s deal at Elland Road expires at the end of the current season but the club hold a unilateral option to trigger an extension until the summer of 2024.

However, given his injury concerns and lack of game time, the Athletic journalist thinks that it is unlikely to happen.

Hay wrote in a recent Q&A ,”As for Forshaw, we haven’t had a proper update on him in a while – and we haven’t seen him play this side of new year so it’s very hard to imagine him being influential in the run-in.

“Forshaw’s contract is almost up too. Given that he’s made six appearances this season, you’d have to think that Leeds won’t activate the 12-month extension option.”

Makes sense

Forshaw is 31 and isn’t getting any younger so for Leeds to think that he’ll be the same player once he returns, is naive, to say the least.

It makes sense to part ways with him in the summer and get his wages off the payroll as he’s not done much to prove he merits them.

Leeds can then go on and sign another midfielder as they will perhaps be needing one even if Weston McKennie signs permanently.

Whether or not they go for someone established, remains to be seen, but it’s fair to assume that Forshaw may have played his last game for the club.

It will be really surprising if Leeds make the emotional decision and end up activating the extension clause in his deal.

However, if their plans are to get a transfer fee from him in the summer then it makes sense, but it remains to be seen which club is willing to take the punt on him.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites may now be able to land a target they made an approach for in January with his club now waiting for £20million offer.
