Phil Hay shares if Ian Poveda is close to Leeds United first team
Attacker Ian Poveda is reportedly a “long way away” from the Leeds United first team as he is spending this season out on loan.
According to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay, the 22-year-old, who is on loan at Blackpool, is out of favour under Jesse Marsch.
The future for him at Elland Road remains uncertain as he is still far off from the first team and does not look likely to break into it any time soon.
Speaking on the Phil Hay Show, right around the five-minute mark, Hay said, “It’s not crystal clear with Poveda. He is a long way away from the first team. He was in the mix under Bielsa and then not in the mix and he’s out of the picture under Marsch as well so you wonder what the future holds for him.”
Poveda could be fighting for his Elland Road future this season at Blackpool and he’s got to treat it like it’s the most important one of his career.
Under Marcelo Bielsa, he was not used regularly, but often made the bench and came off it sometimes to turn fortunes around for Leeds.
As a youngster, this certainly impressed many and he was expected to go on to achieve great things at Elland Road.
Even Pep Guardiola is an admirer of him and has waxed lyrical over his “Incredible power to develop”. [LancsLive]
However, that did not happen as he was out of the mix under the Argentine shortly after and then did not win back his spot in the first team.
The same is the case with Jesse Marsch as well who let him leave on loan and if he does not impress in the Championship, he will probably be sold next summer.
It makes no sense to keep someone who’ll then be 23 and still not progressed from the player he was three to four years ago as this is the crucial period for them to evolve into better players.
