Phil Hay shares 49ers transfer budget update after what Daniel Farke told Leeds United board

Phil Hay has shared a transfer budget at Leeds United amid the impending takeover of the club by the San Francisco 49ers.

The update from Hay comes after new manager Daniel Farke explained to the Leeds board that he is in the role for the long haul.

Farke was appointed as the new Whites boss on a four-year deal on Tuesday (4 July), as confirmed by the official Leeds website.

“I think, given that the 49ers are taking over, and the budget level at Leeds is going to change as a result of that, he thinks that the finances that would be available here, if and when Leeds get promoted, would give him a much better chance of establishing himself in the Premier League and sticking around in this job for a while,” Hay said on The Square Ball podcast (5 July).

“And a four-year contract gives him a chance to do that, but I think what he was trying to say to Leeds was, ‘I don’t accept this as a marriage of convenience in which I get you up, you bin me off and go for somebody else who you think is more suited to the Premier League.’

“He thinks that he’ll get Leeds promoted and then stick around for a while, and that was certainly part of his pitch to the club.”

Good first impression

Farke clearly made a good impression on the Leeds hierarchy, with the German undoubtedly up against some top managers for the managerial role at Elland Road.

He has, therefore, proven that he can talk the talk, but now it is all about showing that he can walk the walk as the boss gets going with his new squad on the training ground.

It’s a hugely important pre-season for the Whites, with the players needing to hit the ground running at Thorp Arch after their summer holidays.

Many among the squad will still be hurting following their relegation from the Premier League, but it is now up to the manager to put that in the past and focus on the new campaign.

Immediate promotion to the top flight will, of course, be the priority for Farke and his coaching staff, but that is much easier said than done given the competitiveness of the Championship.

In other Leeds United news, one Whites player has accepted all conditions for a temporary exit, according to Fabrizio Romano.
