Phil Hay responds as some Leeds fans reckon 75% rule will help them win PL return amid EFL break

Leeds United fans have been trying to seek out reasons why they should not be worried about missing out on promotion to the Premier League.

As it stands, Leeds are top of the Championship, seven points clear of third but there are ideas being floated about in the media that suggest the current season should be null and voided.

That would mean Liverpool would miss out on winning their first-ever Premier League title and Leeds would miss out on returning to the top-flight after 16 years of playing in the Championship and League One.

It really wouldn’t be fair at all, which is why some Leeds fans are hoping that a rule should help them be handed automatic promotion.

The rule says that “in the event of a Team withdrawing from the Competition before completing 75% of fixtures for the Playing Season all points obtained by or recorded against such defaulting Team shall be expunged from the Competition table.”

We are not sure where this rule has been dug up from but it’s been doing the rounds on social media and a lot of Leeds fans are seeing it as boosting their chances of promotion.

However, The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has killed that hope, pointing out that it only applies to teams withdrawing from competitions and does not apply to the current “unprecedented” situation.

As Hay points out, teams are not withdrawing from the competition and we assume that this rule is written for teams who go bust mid-season or, for whatever reason, have to drop out of the league after 75 per cent of games have been played.

No one really knows what is going to happen to this season but we think the least controversial route to take would be to play the remaining fixtures at some point.
