Phil Hay provides Georginio Rutter fitness update ahead of Leeds United v Brentford clash
Leeds United record-signing Georginio Rutter has admitted he is “not quite 100%” fit before the club’s must-win match against Brentford on Sunday (22 January), according to Phil Hay.
Rutter, 20, signed from Hoffenheim earlier in the transfer window for a reported £35.5million [Sky Sports, 15 January] as Jesse Marsch looked to bolster his attacking options in the January transfer window.
The French forward spoke to the press on Friday (20 January) ahead of the showdown against Thomas Frank’s side and a potential debut for the West Yorkshire club.
The Athletic’s Hay reported that Leeds’ club-record transfer still isn’t at full match fitness after taking a break away from training while the transfer was being brokered.
He Tweeted: “Rutter had a short break from training while the transfer was being done: ‘If I’m being totally honest, I’m not quite at 100% but I soon will be.'”
Although Rutter may not be fully fit to start from the first whistle on Sunday, his arrival and the impact he can have from the bench could be huge.
The 20-year-old forward has bags of pace and is known for his ability to stretch defences – something that could be lethal in the closing stages of what should be an entertaining affair against the Bees.
With Rodrigo and Willy Gnonto finding their goalscoring boots in recent weeks and Patrick Bamford netting twice against Cardiff City on his return from injury, Marsch suddenly has an abundance of options in attack.
Against Aston Villa, a clinical edge was all that stood between them and three points, and the Whites’ American manager will hope Rutter’s introduction can drive standards in training.
Although comfortable defeating the Bluebirds in midweek, the pressure is still well and truly on Marsch following an indifferent Premier League season, and three points would be a huge step towards reasserting trust with the fanbase.
