Phil Hay: No talk of Fulham obligation to buy Leeds United winger Dan James

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has reported that Fulham don’t have an obligation to buy Leeds United winger Dan James at the end of his loan spell at Craven Cottage.

James’ move to Fulham was revealed by talkSPORT’s Alex Crook (via Twitter, 1 September) as the 24-year-old departed Elland Road on a season-long agreement.

However, despite not seeing a future for James at Elland Road, Hay suggested that the West London club don’t have an obligation to buy the former Manchester United man.

Talking on the latest edition of the Phil Hay Show [19:50, 2 September], he said “I still need to ask about the details of the Dan James deal, but there has been no talk about an obligation to buy with Fulham taking him on permanently at the end of the loan.

“It seems and feels to me that this is the end of his time at Leeds, it’s hard to envisage how he goes on a season-long loan and then comes back and suddenly fits back into the squad.

“He’s at an age where he probably isn’t going to progress and it does feel a little bit like Leeds have moved on.”

Hard to come back

Considering James’ age, it doesn’t seem likely that he will come back into first-team contention at Elland Road at the end of his loan spell.

Even if he thrives at Fulham, it is clear that Jesse Marsch doesn’t see him as part of his three-pronged attacking midfield, with Luis Sinisterra, Jack Harrison and Brenden Aaronson his preferred choices at present.

It’s easy to see why the club haven’t included an obligation in James’ loan move.

The Welsh international has all the raw attributes to be a top player and Leeds will be aware that if he does have a profitable loan spell, then they could potentially sell him on for more money elsewhere, rather than for a set price with Fulham.

With Leeds adding Willy Gnonto to their ranks, it makes James’ move to Craven Cottage make a lot more sense.

If the Whites had failed to add another player after his departure then questions would have really been asked of the board at Elland Road.

However, it appears the club did have deals ready to go and Gnonto could prove to be an exciting addition at Elland Road.
