Phil Hay suggested that Middlesbrough's third goal against Leeds United on Monday (22 April) will have caused Daniel Farke to "kick in the advertisement boards".

The Whites did well to remain calm under pressure from Michael Carrick's squad, having gone 1-0 down to an Isaiah Jones goal after seven minutes.

Crysencio Summerville, Patrick Bamford and Wilfried Gnonto all helped Leeds to edge a seven-goal thriller, with Emmanuel Latte Lath's 87th-minute header adding late drama at the Riverside Stadium.

Speaking via The Square Ball podcast on Thursday (25 April), Hay said: "They [Leeds] were on top, but then they conceded that goal. It was a clever header, but at the same time, it was really soft.

"It was the sort of thing that makes managers kick in the advertisement boards because it's easy to defend."

Leeds United avoid late blow to promotion hopes against Middlesbrough

Though Carrick's side had little to fight for, with only a handful of matches of the campaign remaining, Leeds fans know only too well that Middlesbrough are one of those sides who always play with a little more edge against the Whites.

And Leeds really did have to dig deep to get the job done at the Riverside Stadium with the teams only separated by Summerville's stunner and second goal of the night.

Having already scored earlier in the game, Latte Lath tipped a deft header over Illan Meslier, putting Middlesbrough within one goal with three minutes plus added time remaining.

Another late goal would have been hugely detrimental to Leeds' automatic promotion hopes, with the Whites probably in a direct fight with Ipswich Town for second now.

Daniel Farke will have been angered by Middlesbrough's third goal against Leeds United in a 4-3 win

Leicester City managed a comfortable 5-0 win over Southampton, who looked to be eyeing up an automatic promotion spot themselves, which also saw a four-point gap open up at the top of the Championship table.

While the Tractor Boys have a game in hand, Farke's squad will only be focusing on themselves and their two games left against QPR and Southampton.
