Leeds United planning USA trip during World Cup break - Phil Hay

Leeds United are planning a trip to the USA during the World Cup break in November and December, according to The Athletic’s Phil Hay.

The Whites have been handed an unexpected month long break from fixtures this month following Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s death, which saw games against Nottingham Forest and Manchester United postponed.

The club then face another six week break in November and December for the 2022 Qatar World Cup and during a Q&A on The Athletic website, [14 September], Hay has stated that there is talk about what to do during that point of the season.

“This is a good question because to look at Leeds’ fixture list as it stands, they’ve had an unexpected month’s break imposed on them now by postponements,” he said.

“That’s going to require some thought about their training schedule. Then, like everyone else, they’ve got another month and a half with no matches coming because of the World Cup in November and December.

“It’s far from ideal when it comes to finding form or rhythm.

“There has been talk of Jesse Marsch and his squad heading to the USA during the World Cup, possibly to San Francisco, to tick over and stay in shape.

“Their plans should become clearer as the tournament gets closer.”

It was always likely that a warm-weather training camp would be the way that Leeds went, and it was even more likely that it would be in America.

The club will have plenty of players performing at the tournament, but they will have several key players not involved and Jesse Marsch will want to ensure he can keep them sharp and fit so they hit the ground running once the season resumes.

Players like Illan Meslier, Luis Sinisterra, Jack Harrison, Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo are all key to Leeds’ goals this season and are unlikely to be part of the World Cup, but can have a big impact on how Leeds perform once the league starts back up.

Taking them away will see their minds focused and their fitness worked on more stringently, and hopefully that will see Leeds get back to work quickly after their break come Boxing Day.
