Phil Hay: Leeds United unlikely to break transfer record in 2022 summer window

Phil Hay does not expect Leeds United to smash past their transfer record again in the upcoming summer window.

The Athletic journalist was asked what kind of bracket the Whites will be spending on each player they will look to bring in.

Hay guessed that it would be around £20million, if not slightly higher, but not beyond the near-£30million spent on Rodrigo.

Speaking on the Phil Hay Show [25 March], the journalist was asked if Leeds will be looking to spend in the £15-20million bracket for players again.

“There, or slightly higher – I am guessing here,” he said.

“There or maybe slightly higher, but I don’t see this summer being a massive push beyond, say what they were spending on Rodrigo for example.”

Leeds United

Not massive.

It would have been easy to assume that with the 49ers Enterprise and Andrea Radrizzani bringing in Jesse Marsch, he could be backed massively.

Instead, it looks as though they will be smart by bringing in more quality in separate areas, rather than huge money on one big name.

That is definitely needed right now, with Leeds not in a spot where they only need to strengthen one spot, there are numerous areas that need looking at.

A new striker, midfielder and possibly two full-backs could all be needed at Elland Road, and if each cost £15-20million, we could be looking at a summer of £80million thrown into transfers.

Of course, selling someone such as Raphinha could cover that completely, which could then lead to a huge record-breaking transfer.

Time will tell but certainly, watch this space.
