Phil Hay: Leeds United striker Ryan Edmundson set to join Carlisle United

Leeds United striker Ryan Edmondson is set to depart Elland Road on a permanent deal to join Carlisle United, as reported by The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.

The 21-year-old striker spent the second half of last season on loan at Port Vale.

The youngster scored three goals and notched one assist for the League Two side.

However, with his Elland Road career never really taking off the youngster is set to depart the club.

Hay reported via his personal Twitter account on 22 June that the youngster is set to join the Cumbrians and reignite his relationship with former Paul Simpson, who he knows from the England youth set-up.

Good move

When a player has had a number of loan spells and failed to hit the ground running in any of them it definitely means it is time to move on.

Edmondson has had chances to really lay down a marker at a lower level that the Premier League and has failed.

Despite only being 21, it is very unlikely that the forward will be able to make an impression on the Leeds United first team in the coming years.

With his Leeds United contract coming to its conclusion in the summer of 2023, it makes sense for the Whites to let the youngster depart the club.

It’s disappointing for Leeds to see a young player fail at Elland Road, but ultimately that is the risk that has to be taken when recruiting younger players.

Leeds have an excellent group of younger players and there will undoubtedly be more success stories than failures in the coming years.

In other Leeds United news, one Brazilian football expert has delivered an intriguing suggestion for the 25-year-old’s short term future.
