Phil Hay: Leeds getting closer to sealing midfielder deal
Leeds United have identified a number of different priority signings this summer as they look to improve their squad.
The Whites have already brought in Junior Firpo to fill the hole at left-back, and are closing in on a replacement for Kiko Casilla.
Fans at Elland Road want outfield signings though, and it looks as though they could be set to get their wish soon.
Phil Hay returned to action on Friday, and he was full of updates.
The Athletic journalist loved by fans as the most reliable source at the club insisted that the Whites are closer to sealing another deal.
“Leeds are closer to finding a central midfielder, increasing the depth in an area where Bielsa’s first-choice players carry the heaviest burden,” he wrote.
“Leeds think an extra addition would be prudent.”
Stuart Dallas will now have the freedom to play as a midfielder now that Firpo has arrived at Elland Road.
That means we will likely need another holding midfielder, rather than a man ahead of where Kalvin Phillips will play.
No one will dislodge the Yorkshire Pirlo, but when he was injured last season, Leeds had no specialists and struggled heavily.
Having a younger option who can play in both of those roles and progress first as a rotation option will be perfect.
Hopefully, this is the first sign that Victor Orta is working his magic behind the scenes, and we can prepare for an announcement in the next couple of weeks before the pre-season games start.
