Phil Hay: Leeds United could be set for compensation package after confirmed Cody Drameh transfer exit
Leeds United could be set for a compensation package from Cody Drameh’s loan exit to Birmingham City providing they tie him down to a new contract, according to Phil Hay.
The Athletic journalist, taking to his personal Twitter account (1 September) shares that the Drameh to Birmingham deal involves a loan fee with the West Midlands outfit paying a loan fee.
Birmingham confirmed the signing of the 21-year-old defender who had only been handed just 22 minutes on the pitch this season by new Whites manager Daniel Farke.
And according to Hay, Leeds could be set for a compensation fee because of his age, despite him being out of contract next summer.
He wrote: “Drameh deal involves a loan fee, with Birmingham paying all of his wages.
“Because of his age, Leeds can secure a compensation fee despite him being out of contract next summer, provided they offer him a new deal.”
Cash boost
Drameh has not had the best time of things at Elland Road since returning from a loan spell with Luton Town, with his only Championship appearance this term – a substitute appearance against Ipswich Town – which saw him make a costly mistake.
The 21-year-old has showcased his talent elsewhere, having also caught the eye during a spell with Cardiff City, but he will now look to find regular football away from West Yorkshire with Birmingham City now handing him a fresh new opportunity.
Following the signing of Tottenham defender Djed Spence on loan, Drameh could have seen his game-time severely limited despite his success at Luton Town, and it was a shame he couldn’t return there on loan to further his development in the Premier League, but a deal never materialised.
It’s always a real shame to see a talented Elland Road youth product depart the club but it seems as if the Whites are due a healthy cash boost should they tie him down to a new deal but whether Drameh wants to secure his future at Elland Road remains uncertain.
Let’s see how he fares in the West Midlands. Good opportunity for him.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites may reportedly make an improved offer for one of their long-term targets.
