Phil Hay: Leeds ace Patrick Bamford has never had better chance for England call-up
Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford has enjoyed one of the best seasons of his professional career during this campaign.
After his initial struggles at Elland Road, question marks were surrounding his ability to make the jump into the Premier League after promotion.
Bamford has answered those critics, scoring 13 goals and adding five assists already and it has given him a huge chance of a call-up to the England squad.
Gareth Southgate has been present at nearly every single Leeds game in the past couple of months, taking in the action of the Whites.
Writing in the Athletic, Phil Hay has recently claimed that Bamford will never have a better chance of getting that call-up in the next selection; March 18th.
“The bigger picture is staring England’s head coach in the face, though, and Bamford will know that if Southgate looks past him this time, a clearer window of opportunity might not open again,” he wrote.
Bamford has been in excellent form and fully deserves this opportunity.
The 27-year-old has played himself in front of the likes of Callum Wilson, Ollie Watkins, Danny Ings and Dominic Calvert-Lewin this season.
Harry Kane is the only English player to score more goals in the Premier League, and Bamford has a better shot accuracy than the Three Lions captain [BBC].
With the European Championships around the corner, Southgate must pick his sides based on form alone, and that could give the Whites talisman the perfect chance to stake his claim in the England squad next month.
