Phil Hay: Leeds spent £10k on Dan James helicopter v Fulham

Leeds United winger Dan James made the headlines this month ahead of the Carabao Cup clash against Fulham.

The Welsh international had an action-packed day, watching his partner give birth and then travelling by helicopter and playing 90 minutes as the Whites won on penalties.

Phil Hay has shared the latest on that story, insisting that Andrea Radrizzani and the club spent £10,000 to make that happen.

Writing on his personal Twitter account on Thursday morning, Hay shared the news that will no doubt show how important James was to the squad that night.

“Dan James’ partner gave birth around lunchtime in Manchester,” he wrote.

“Within a few hours, and for just under £10k, a helicopter had taken him to Battersea in time for him to play against Fulham.”

Special.

Watching the Leeds squad welcome a player that had only just arrived at the club with ecstatic open arms looked strange at Craven Cottage, but it all made sense very quickly.

Jack Harrison and Raphinha were both ruled out of the clash due to COVID and an injury problem, so James stepping up was crucial.

Crysencio Summerville starting was brilliant, but adding another under-23 player into the mix against an experienced Championship side could have seen the result change.

James was clearly desperate to get down to London and get another start under his belt this early into his Elland Road career, and cementing his spot in the side was one of his main priorities.

Having players such as this in the squad will always be critical, and Radrizzani is clearly seeing that more than anyone – this was a brilliant move.
