Phil Hay: Leeds set to sign young Arsenal striker who has been compared to Robin van Persie
Leeds United are set to add another quality addition to their Under-23 set-up, according to Phil Hay.
After making a number of younger signings this summer already, the latest being Dutch goalkeeper Dani van den Heuvel from Ajax, Leeds are set to sign young Arsenal striker Sam Greenwood, 18.
Hay claims that Leeds are set to pay a six-figure sum for the versatile attacker, who can also play on the wing and will try to get it wrapped up this week.
Under-23s coach Carlos Corberan landed the job at Huddersfield and it means that Leeds need to find the manager who will look after this new crop of youngsters.
Hay has said the job could go to one of Bielsa’s current backroom staff, Diego Flores, Pablo Quiroga or Diego Reyes.
Where are the senior signings?
Greenwood is only 18 but has been turning heads at Arsenal, with Football.London describing him as a “wonderkid”.
They also said that he was being linked with a “shock” move to Juventus or AC Milan last year, with Bundesliga sides also scouting him.
He can play as a number nine or a winger and plays up-front for the England Under-18s.
They claim Greenwood has been compared to Robin van Persie because of his “exceptional ball-striking ability”.
That sounds like a very exciting attacking addition to the Under-23s, who already boast Wigan striker Joe Gelhardt.
They’re set to play in Premier League 2 this season after the Leeds academy was awarded Category One status.
Meanwhile, Leeds fans are hoping for signings for the first team to be announced.
There are less than three weeks to go before Leeds face Liverpool at Anfield, and they still only have one senior centre-back, Liam Cooper, and one striker, Patrick Bamford.
Things need to happen there soon.
