Phil Hay: Leeds make decision on whether first-teamer is to undergo surgery

Leeds United have decided against Adam Forshaw having an operation on a hip injury that has kept him sidelined since September, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.

Forshaw, 28, has been ruled out of Saturday’s match against Fulham at Craven Cottage, meaning that the former Middlesbrough midfielder is now set to miss his 16th Championship fixture of the season.

Leeds have lacked central midfield options in recent weeks due to Jamie Shackleton also being injured and Hay has pointed out that this could be an indefinite issue for the Whites.

“We’ve got Forshaw, who is missing again for Fulham this weekend and there has to be a worry about his fitness,” the former Yorkshire Evening Post journalist said on the Phil Hay Show podcast via Spotify [5min30s]

“It’s been going on for a long time and I know the club certainly don’t want him to go for an operation and don’t want to lose him to that.

“But you do feel that it can be indefinite this. He’s trying week-after-week to get back and not quite making it.”

Leeds fans are certainly worried about Forshaw’s fitness because each week it seems as though the midfielder is close to a return but never actually features.

Marcelo Bielsa is someone who demands peak fitness from his players and for whatever reason, Forshaw just cannot get back to the level that is required for him to be able to play.

In regards to surgery, it seems as though the ship has sailed there but maybe Leeds should have sent Forshaw for an operation earlier in the campaign.

It could be something that is fixed by an operation but it would mean that he would spend even longer on the sidelines now.

Leeds could do with some extra strength in depth in the centre of the midfield but due to Financial Fair Play regulations and the fact that Bielsa likes to have a small squad of players, you get the sense that one won’t be brought in next month.

In other Leeds United news, Kyle Bartley has made an admission about the Whites.
