Phil Hay: Leeds likely to rake in seven-figure sum in one fixture to boost January budget

Leeds United are likely to rake in a “seven-figure sum” from their clash against Arsenal in the FA Cup third round next month, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side travels to the Emirates on January 6 after being drawn to play the managerless Premier League club in last week’s draw.

Hay, reporting via The Athletic’s website, claims that fixture alone could see the Whites pocket over £1million and have that added to Bielsa’s budget for the January transfer window.

However it is understood that the Argentine is unlikely to ask Leeds to spend a single penny of the budget unless Arsenal were to recall Eddie Nketiah from his loan spell at Elland Road.

At the moment, it would not be a shock if Arsenal did recall Nketiah as the young forward is yet to start a single Championship fixture for Leeds.

However he is still earning regular game-time off the bench – which is a lot better than what he would be getting if he was still at the Emirates.

Bielsa has never really shown a great urge to splash the cash on new signings at Leeds and we are now at a point – almost a year-and-a-half into his reign – where the Argentine is trusted to work his magic with what he has got.

Yes, Leeds have to deal with a lot of injuries and have a relatively small squad as it is.

But with the Whites top of the table after 21 matches, can anyone really question the manager’s methods any more?

In other Leeds United news, Jeff Stelling has one concern about Leeds despite seeing them go top of the table on Tuesday night.
