Phil Hay: Kalvin Phillips set to agree new Leeds United deal before Christmas
Phil Hay expects Leeds United and Kalvin Phillips to reach an agreement over a new contract before Christmas Day.
Phillips, 25, has spent his entire career at Leeds, but his performances in the Premier League and for England at the European Championship have seen his stock rise, with the likes of Manchester United now routinely linked with the midfielder’s services.
However, The Telegraph’s John Percy claimed on Thursday [30/10/21] that Phillips is in advanced talks over improved terms.
Speaking on The Phil Hay Show [30/09/21], The Athletic’s Hay has cast his prediction for when an agreement will be made.
“I think it’s highly likely that this side of Christmas, or soon enough, there will be an agreement over a new deal,” he said.
“There will be work to be done on it and everything else but it does seem like both sides are very willing about that.”

Inevitable
It seems as if this is a deal that is growing ever closer to being concluded.
There have been various reports in recent weeks surrounding Phillips’ future at Elland Road, with links to Manchester United refusing to subside, but a Leeds exit never seemed realistic, certainly not at this stage.
Yes, the Whites are enduring a bad run of form at the start of the season, and concerns will heighten if they do not pick up their first Premier Leaegue win soon.
But it’s short-termism to think they are in real danger.
Leeds are a club that are going places, and Phillips has no reason to leave at this stage of his career.
He has proven that he can cement an England starting spot by staying at Leeds, so he does not need to push for a move to an ‘elite’ side that is in the Champions League.
In other Leeds United news, a journalist has suggested the Whites may look to offload this player in January if Marcelo Bielsa reduces his minutes.
