Phil Hay issues update on Leeds United transfer pursuit of Ilia Gruev

Leeds United are expected to sign Werder Bremen midfielder Ilia Gruev having moved quickly for him, according to Phil Hay.

The Athletic journalist reported on Thursday (31 August) that the 23-year-old is a player Daniel Farke himself wants to bring to Elland Road.

The Whites are keen on signing midfielders ahead of the deadline and may even look to sign another one along with the Bulgaria international.

Hay said on the Square Ball at 29:29, “A guy called Ilia Gruev which seems to have moved really quickly. He’s 23-years-old and I get the vibes first thing that one’s going to happen. Very much a Farke target. That one, by all accounts, has got a pretty serious chance. I think they might do two to give them some bodies there.”

Get it done

Given how football club structures work these days, managers often do not get the desired players they want.

It’s a concerted effort taken by sporting directors and the board and only if everyone is on the same page, a transfer goes ahead.

There does not seem to be anyone vetoing the deal for the Bulgaria international and that’s how it should be, given how slow the club have been in signing a new midfielder.

Leeds United

It remains to be seen if Gruev will need convincing but the vibes seem to be pretty positive surrounding his pursuit.

There have been links to Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara as well so there’s always the chance of him coming in as well.

Leeds certainly will try to bring in more bodies in that area of the pitch in the next 48 hours and the likelihood of fresh names emerging is a very realistic possibility.

In other Leeds United news, agents and personal terms update has emerged as the Whites have agreed a fee for another new signing.
