Phil Hay issues Leeds United injury update after win v Cardiff City

Junior Firpo only suffered a dead leg against Cardiff City on Saturday and the injury shouldn’t be a “big issue” for Leeds United, according to Phil Hay.

The Whites outclassed the Welsh side in a superb Championship performance at the Cardiff City Stadium but will have been worried by yet another issue with one of Daniel Farke’s defenders.

The Athletic journalist shared an update on his personal Twitter account (13 January) that Firpo should be fine after the left-back was spotted with an injury issue in the second half before being replaced by Sam Byram.

Hay posted: “Firpo got a dead leg today, but shouldn’t be a big issue.”

And breathe

There will have been no prizes for guessing how Farke would have reacted when Firpo was withdrawn six minutes from the end of the match.

With key centre-backs, Pascal Struik already out injured, and Liam Cooper unavailable against an injury to another defender will have been the last thing Farke wanted.

Leeds United

Also, the Whites sanctioned the exits of Djed Spence who went back to his parent club Tottenham, and Luke Ayling who joined Middlesbrough on loan, Firpo’s absence will not have helped matters at Elland Road at all.

Thankfully, Firpo’s issue isn’t thought to be serious and he should be fit and ready to go again against Preston North End next Sunday (21 January).

There have been doubts over Firpo’s ability and there’s even talk of an exit from the club but given the limited resources at full-back, that may have to wait until the summer window. Unless Firpo can prove he has a future beyond that.
